Astrology 101 · Lesson 2 of 8
The 12 signs: a quick tour
This is an introduction to ZodiacFolk’s reflective approach to modern Western astrology, which measures the zodiac from the March equinox (the “tropical” zodiac). Other traditions, including predictive ones, work differently.
Picture the sky as a big circle. Astrologers cut that circle into 12 equal slices of 30 degrees each, and each slice is a sign. The Sun spends about a month in each one, which is why your birthday points to your Sun sign. Let’s walk around the circle together.
I’ll be your tour guide, and I promise no quiz.
First, two sorting tricks
Every sign belongs to one element and one mode. Learn these two and the 12 signs stop feeling like a random list.
Elements (four of them, three signs each):
- Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Energetic, enthusiastic, quick to start.
- Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Practical, steady, hands-on.
- Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Curious, social, idea-driven.
- Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Feeling-focused, intuitive, sensitive.
Modes (three of them, four signs each):
- Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): starters, the first sign of each season in the northern hemisphere.
- Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): keepers, staying power in the middle of a season.
- Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): adapters, the last sign of a season, ready for change.
The tour, one line each
Dates are approximate and can shift by a day from year to year.
- Aries (about Mar 21 to Apr 19): the starter. Direct and quick.
- Taurus (Apr 20 to May 20): the builder. Patient, likes comfort.
- Gemini (May 21 to Jun 20): the talker. Curious about everything.
- Cancer (Jun 21 to Jul 22): the carer. Tender and protective.
- Leo (Jul 23 to Aug 22): the performer. Warm, generous, likes being seen.
- Virgo (Aug 23 to Sep 22): the fixer. Detail-minded and helpful.
- Libra (Sep 23 to Oct 22): the balancer. Fair-minded, loves harmony.
- Scorpio (Oct 23 to Nov 21): the investigator. Intense and private.
- Sagittarius (Nov 22 to Dec 21): the explorer. Restless and honest.
- Capricorn (Dec 22 to Jan 19): the planner. Ambitious and patient.
- Aquarius (Jan 20 to Feb 18): the inventor. Independent and unconventional.
- Pisces (Feb 19 to Mar 20): the dreamer. Imaginative and empathetic.
What the signs are (and aren’t)
A sign describes a style, not a personality in a box. Two Leos can be very different people, because everyone has more than a Sun: a Moon, a rising sign, and eight other planets, all in signs of their own. The signs are a vocabulary for talking about style, the way “brisk” or “gentle” are.
Also worth knowing: the signs here are the tropical zodiac, whose zero point is the March equinox point. That’s the system most Western astrologers use. (Vedic astrology uses a different convention; see the glossary.)
“Cusp” birthdays
If you were born within a day or so of a sign change, the exact time of your birth, in your local time zone, decides your Sun sign. That’s normal. It’s the same as being born close to midnight and wondering which date applies.
Try this
Look up the element and mode of your Sun sign, then your Moon sign if you know it. Write them as a two-word label (“fixed water”). Then notice which of the 12 signs you find hardest to understand. That’s usually where the most interesting conversation is.
Next: make a star map of the real sky above any place and moment.
